Former Nurse and charity fundraiser Pat celebrated her 100th birthday at The Haven last week. Pat has lived at the care home on Whitehouse Lane in the town since May 2023. She was born in Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland and grew up in Cork City.

She came to London in 1942 where she met John, her husband-to-be, who was a GP and they both came to Boston in 1949 when he joined Dr Darlow’s GP surgery in Church Close, Boston before moving to Greyfriars Surgery. Her husband John was a very well-known and respected Doctor until he retired: his photo is still up on the wall in the surgery.

Pat was a qualified Nurse and a housewife. She has two children, four grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was also the Mayoress of Boston in the 80’s and both her and her husband belonged to Holy Trinity Church where she had lots of friends.

In 2021 Pat gained local notoriety when she completed a sponsored walk to raise nearly £850 for the Centrepoint Outreach Charity for homeless people in Boston: https://www.lincolnshireworld.com/news/people/boston-woman-97-completes-sponsored-walk-for-homeless-charity-3461673.

Pat had an amazing day with 142 cards received at the home following an appeal by the home’s activities team. Cards received included one from the King and Queen, children from a local nursery and many more from the community.

On the day itself Pat enjoyed visits from her family and friends, a wonderful afternoon tea party with The Dreambelles providing the entertainment, plus a visit from David Brown, the Mayor of Boston and Dr Andrew Doddrell from the surgery where her late husband was a GP.

Manager Evangeline Girling thanked her team at the home: “We had such a wonderful day with Pat and her friends. We made sure her special birthday was celebrated in style and she really enjoyed being the centre of attention.”
